The Economic Stimulus Package : Fund Your Future

By Lindsay C. Jones, Associate Attorney of Hehr & Myers Co., L.P.A.

As part of filing a federal income tax return for 2007, as many as 116 million American families and individuals will automatically qualify for a stimulus payment, here in 2008. For many, this rebate check will come as a welcome help towards paying for basic living needs. For others, it may well be spent on entertainment or travel plans that today's tight budgets don't otherwise allow for.

In fact, having recipients spend their stimulus payment is the main point of the Federal Government's planning. By having citizens actively purchase goods and services, it helps to stabilize the companies who make, sell, and ship those items.

However, as an individual, what YOU need to consider is how to best 'stimulate' your future. Think about using the money in ways that will benefit the quality, length, and efficiency of your lifestyle. Investing to help fund your retirement nest egg, updating your televisions to Digital TV (DTV) for 2009, or finally scheduling that pesky dental or medical appointment are all solid examples of investing in your future.

However, don't forget that having a Will Based Estate Plan is just as much a necessity of your future- and that it should encompass not only a Will, but also a Living Will, Powers of Attorney, and HIPAA authorizations. Such Will Based Estate Plans are must-haves for you and your loved ones in emergencies, and also help to cost-effectively coordinate your estate needs. They also give your friends and family the comfort of knowing that they will be carrying out your future wishes regarding death or disability.

Make your stimulus payment work for you and your loved ones. Don't just stimulate today's economy- stimulate your future.
